Winter ……

December 6, 2009

In case anyone doesn’t know, I have been in Arizona for the past month or so. This will be our third winter down here and I can’t imagine giving up the trek for many years to come.cactus-montanero

We drove down in two days again. We had told ourselves last year that making the trip in two days was ridiculous. We have all the time in the world and should make a holiday of it. However, as the day grew closer and the weather in BC deteriorated, we knew it was time to make like the birds and head South. So on November 1st, with the car loaded to the roof, we headed down the road. I don’t know what we take down each year, but we always manage to have a full vehicle.

The trip down was uneventful. We did find that, although there may be less expensive and/or better motels along the way, Comfort Inns are great. Just what needed and always clean with breakfast in the morning. They are also “Pet Friendly” and that is a must with us.

Oscar is a fabulous traveler and took the two day ride in stride. The scenery is awesome. I never get tired of seeing the landscape change from mountains to plains to badlands and finally to desert. There is beauty in all areas. You just have to look for it a little harder in some places.

When we arrived it was late at night and there were no surprises. We thought the house would be dusty and things outside may have been broken …. or something. But our home was exactly the way we had left it. We have great friends and great neighbours in Arizona. I don’t know what we would do without them.

This year the Canadian dollar is higher so it is like getting an unexpected raise. I just hope it holds there for the winter. The price of housing has dropped of course since we made our purchase, but we were expecting that. The housing market has stabilized now and there are multiple offers on the desirable homes. So if you plan on making an offer on something down here, be prepared to offer more than they are asking for it. You will still have a hell of a deal.

We have been to a few of our favourite places already, but we are saving the places we haven’t been to until some visitors arrive. That way we will be able to enjoy the new experience with them.

Word has it that Alberta has a received a wee bit of snow the other day. That’s a shame…… (lol) …. it really is. Hey! …….  and how about those “Rough Riders” eh? 8-9-10-11-12-13-14 ….. yes I qualify to be a Rough Rider’s” Coach ….
