Drill Baby Drill!

May 1, 2010

“Drill Baby Drill” was the battle cry of John McCain, Sarah Palin and the Republicans during the Presidential election of 2008. I haven’t heard that battle cry for over a week now. Perhaps they are all down on the Louisiana coast line helping with the worst oil spill in the history of mankind …… but somehow I doubt it.

After a life time of trying to protect the environment, David Susuki must be devastated by the recent events in the Gulf of Mexico. After more than 40  years of gradual progress in slowing pollution, becoming more “Eco friendly” and recycling everything we can get our hands on in an effort to save the planet we should all feel devastated. British Petroleum has put the coast line of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida on a course of no return and total destruction.

It appears that once again man’s unquenchable thirst for energy has caused the eco system to be shattered and untold millions upon millions of animals and plant life to be snuffed from existence. At the time of this writing, the oil is still pouring at a rate of 5,000 barrels a day into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. There is no end in sight. It will be weeks at best, to stop the bleeding and by that time the entire gulf region will be effected. Fisheries, wetlands and tourism will be decimated in the area for decades. The white beaches will now be black, the fish will be rotting and the birds and other animals will suffer a terrible death. All so we can have a source of inexpensive oil. It isn’t so inexpensive now is it?

When do we decide that it’s just not worth it? When do we decide that alternative energy or a huge reduction in the use of fossil fuels is what we should be looking for? When do we decide that creating ethanol from our food and burning it up driving to work is just plain stupid? Think about it……. Loaf of bread ……Cup of gas …… which would you prefer for breakfast? Are we that callous that we have millions of hungry people in the world and still burn up food for pleasure. Am I missing something?
