Have you noticed that every decade or so something comes along that is so scary that our minds go into neutral and we follow the media and our governments lead like sheep? I think it is deemed necessary to give us these scares for a couple of reasons. Money, control and to divert attention from more serious matters. Let’s look back just a few decades to see how this has worked. Do you remember the oil embargos from the 70’s? They lead to long line ups for gasoline in the United States and elsewhere. Was there really a shortage of oil and oil products that was so severe that it could bring the citizens of the United States to their knees? This happened in 1973 as well as 1979. In 1973 it was because of the US decision to support and re-supply Israel in the Yom Kippur War. In 1979 it occurred as a result of the Iranian Revolution. In both cases Americans and others saw gas prices spike and line-ups at the gas stations. Both oil shortages were short lived but served their purpose. They instilled in Americans the need for their involvement in the Middle East and faith [...]

From the Bantam Stampeders website: The Bantam Stampeders ended their terrific season Saturday in Edmonton’s Clarke park yesterday losing a very entertaining Provincial TIER ONE championship game to the Spruce Grove Cougars 31-30. The team played a great game and actually had the lead 30 -24 with just a minute left but just couldn’t hold on. The team put their hearts on a sleeve and played all out but came up just a little short. To win the CITY CHAMPIONSHIP and the SOUTHERN ALBERTA CHAMPIONSHIP and to just lose TWO games the entire year by only TWO points is a fantastic accomplishment by the entire organization. To the Players, coaches and parents and all involved in the 2009 Bantam Stampeder Season, thank you for a terrific season. Congratulations STAMPS on being CITY CHAMPIONS and SOUTHERN ALBERTA CHAMPIONS. Way to go Isaiah! Get ready for next year. Share on Facebook

I never used to be much of a football fan. I sometimes watched the Grey Cup at the end of the season, but only sometimes. That is until my grandson, Isaiah, took up the sport last year. Now I am an avid fan and listen closely when he tells me about the sport. This year, Isaiah plays for the Stampeders in the Bantam League. In October, my wife and I travelled to Calgary to take in one of his games. It was colder than ….. Well you know … It was damn cold. But the game was as exciting as you could ever imagine. It wasn’t until the last few seconds of the final quarter that the Stamps pulled off a play that secured the win for them. It was awesome to see Isaiah out there playing like a “Pro”. Well, since that game in October they have gone on to win not only their division but yesterday, November 7th the Stampeders took the “City Championship”. And guess who scored the winning touchdown. Next week it is on to the Southern Alberta game and then, if all goes according to plan, to the Provincial finals in Edmonton and then to [...]

Late last month I lost a friend. I hadn’t seen him in a very long time. The week before, my wife and I had talked about inviting him to come for a visit. We should have followed through. I can never have that visit now. I knew my friend for over thirty years. I first met him when working at the “Old” Fort. Though small in stature he was big in heart and had a seemingly endless smile and laugh. Those were the old days. The years have been good to many and not so good to others. I wish I had been there. It used to be there were places to turn to; The Union had Ian Hay, the Department had the Diagnostic and referral Unit and we had each other. In an occupation surrounded with workers trained in spotting these things, how could we all have missed it? I’m going to miss that strong French accent that came at you so quickly that it could leave you stymied. I’m going to miss watching someone eat “Mashed potatoes & Mustard”. I’m going to miss just knowing that I can pick up the phone and call…. Au revoir Mon ami ? [...]

For Christians everywhere Easter is a time to remember the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. And so it is even with small children. However, children also know another secret… The Easter Bunny and Easter eggs. Here in the Blind Bay/ Sorrento area, we have a wonderful tradition sponored by the Sorrento Lion’s club, held at the Sorrento/Blind Bay Lion’s Club Park. Everyone gathers at 11:00 am Easter Sunday for the biggest Easter egg hunt in the Columbia Shuswap District. Starting with children under 5, they head out into the field and near by woods in search of Easter eggs. There are thousands of little chocolate eggs hidden and laying about in plain view so that even the smallest tike will fill their basket in record time. But the most valued prize is to find a numbered plastic egg. These can be exchanged at the main tent for a “Large” sized Rabbit, ears and all. This year we ventured out. My wife and I, a daughter, a daughter-in-law and five eager grandchildren. With the exception of Kaleb who is just coming up two month old, they all knew the challenge. “Get out first, pick-up eggs and keep moving”. If they [...]
