Can you tell a “Protester” from an “Anarchist”? Do protesters have a responsibility to restrain anarchists? Do “Labour” groups want to share the stage with these criminals? I watched yesterday morning and listened to Ken Georgetti, President of the Canadian Labour Congress, speak to the media and speak of a peaceful demonstration. The CLC along with groups such as the Ontario Federation of Labour, the Council of Canadians, Greenpeace, Oxfam, and the Canadian Federation of Students had planned a legitimate demonstration to protest and demonstrate and get their message across to the G-8/G-20 participants. The peacefulness soon left. It is a democratic right of all Canadians to assemble and protest issues or concerns held by a group. But where there is a “Right” there is a “Responsibility”. If a group organizes a demonstration or protest they have an obligation to the citizens and community in which they wish to conduct their demonstration or protest. I watched in anger as the turmoil unfolded before our eyes. I watched a group of Anarchists assume control of the demonstration and reek havoc on a Canadian city and it’s citizens, shop owners and police force. When I watch these arrogant, know it all deviants [...]

Have you noticed that every decade or so something comes along that is so scary that our minds go into neutral and we follow the media and our governments lead like sheep? I think it is deemed necessary to give us these scares for a couple of reasons. Money, control and to divert attention from more serious matters. Let’s look back just a few decades to see how this has worked. Do you remember the oil embargos from the 70’s? They lead to long line ups for gasoline in the United States and elsewhere. Was there really a shortage of oil and oil products that was so severe that it could bring the citizens of the United States to their knees? This happened in 1973 as well as 1979. In 1973 it was because of the US decision to support and re-supply Israel in the Yom Kippur War. In 1979 it occurred as a result of the Iranian Revolution. In both cases Americans and others saw gas prices spike and line-ups at the gas stations. Both oil shortages were short lived but served their purpose. They instilled in Americans the need for their involvement in the Middle East and faith [...]

Oil continues to spew into the Gulf of Mexico at a rate that is more than alarming. Is there an end in sight? Nothing so far has had any real effect at stemming the flow. BP and other major league oil companies continue to come up with costly plans to bring an end to the disaster while the wetlands, beaches, fish and wildlife are sent into extinction. The blame game has been going on for some time now. The US government, British Petroleum, the Rig’s owner .. they are all blaming each other. But at this point in the game placing the blame won’t stem the flow of oil. B.P. has promised to clean every last drop of oil from the leak and make everything whole. Call me a pessimist, but I am waiting to see how long it takes for BP to throw it’s hands in the air and walk away from this disaster leaving it to the US to clean up. Of course the US federal government is being pressured to take charge of the situation now. That would be just the excuse BP would need to make their exit. I wonder if oil/oil money could be [...]

“Drill Baby Drill” was the battle cry of John McCain, Sarah Palin and the Republicans during the Presidential election of 2008. I haven’t heard that battle cry for over a week now. Perhaps they are all down on the Louisiana coast line helping with the worst oil spill in the history of mankind …… but somehow I doubt it. After a life time of trying to protect the environment, David Susuki must be devastated by the recent events in the Gulf of Mexico. After more than 40 years of gradual progress in slowing pollution, becoming more “Eco friendly” and recycling everything we can get our hands on in an effort to save the planet we should all feel devastated. British Petroleum has put the coast line of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida on a course of no return and total destruction. It appears that once again man’s unquenchable thirst for energy has caused the eco system to be shattered and untold millions upon millions of animals and plant life to be snuffed from existence. At the time of this writing, the oil is still pouring at a rate of 5,000 barrels a day into the warm waters of the Gulf [...]

A Harley biker is visiting the zoo in Calgary , Alberta when he sees little girl leaning into the bars of the lion’s cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents. The biker without hesitation runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch. Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly. A CBC reporter has watched the whole event. The reporter addressing the biker says, ‘Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I’ve seen a man do in my whole life.’ The Harley rider replies, ‘Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt right.’ The reporter says, ‘Well, I’ll make sure this won’t go unnoticed. I’m a journalist, you know, and tomorrow’s paper will have this story on the front page… So, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?’ The [...]

While I can’t say that I am much of an Olympic fan, for more than one reason, I must say that last night’s opening ceremony pulled at my heart and made me proud to be Canadian. It has been seven long years of preparation leading to a night of unbelievable technical and artistic marvel. While the technical glitch that occurred as the flame was lit will will long be remembered, so will the looks on the faces in the audience and among the competitors. Words spoken by commentators working the event, made even the most disillusioned Canadian sit up and take notice of the respect Canadians enjoy around the world. A sense of pride came knocking on every Canadian’s door. I may have more to say about the Olympics at a later time, but for today and for the next sixteen days, I will be crossing my fingers, waving the flag, watching Olympic Hockey and shouting: “Go Canada Go!” Well done Vancouver! Well done Canada! Share on Facebook
